Show just pulls me in all directions, it’s hard not to fall hard. The last 2 shows I was crazy about were “공주의 남자” and “꽃미남 라면가게” but although I enjoyed those two shows as a whole, there’s one major point of attraction that kept me glued, although I did find the momentum lagging towards the end. For example, it was the OTP for the former and 정일우 for the latter.
However, I’m deeply interested in all angles of which Show is trying to tackle - our OTP, other side couplings, the bromance, the family issue, the teacher-student relationship with Shilba and even the dongnae gangsters’ proud-mocking relationship with the band. And what Show does best is giving those small moments and expressions (this scene in Ep 7 is just one of them).
Of which, Kyung Jong is best at. Seriously, he’s the only character without a love line, and we haven’t got a clue at any family conflict that he could potentially have. But his presence in each scene makes a difference and Kim Min Seok has been doing and saying all the little things that you definitely will not get from other supporting actors with such insignificant role in other dramas. I read that even the producers love him such that though he’s probably noted to be the odd one amongst the other eye candies of the band, the character was tweaked specially to suit him.
And then I think Seung Hoon’s character is about to take a huge turn into becoming the actual villain. At first Strawberry Fields are introduced as brats, perhaps feeling inferior with the sudden emergence of another band full of good looking boys. Then Seung Hoon sort of mellowed down, which I understood as him just enjoying the friendly-rivalry with Eye Candy, probably since he realized that besides their looks, his band is actually superior in all other ways. But now, almost all girls in the school are head over heels for Eye Candy, even his sister is taking Eye Candy in (need sub to fully understand but I don’t think the sister is doing this on behalf of any ill intention on the brother’s side), and he’s losing Su Ah to Ji Hyuk. So basically these people who he initially thought aren’t on the same level of playing field have managed to actually steal things away from him. So I think he’s desperate to win everything back, and based on the raw of Ep 8 I watched, he’s even moving on without his band members and, I fear that he will also manipulate the fact that Eye Candy is now signed by his sister.
And Su Ah, well some people may see her acting as flat but I appreciate that. She’s not totally expressionless, but as I’ve reiterated again and again, she potrays the naivety of a 17 year old perfectly. I mean, she’s pretty. If she was also so full of personality, she would’ve been the most popular girl in school, which the show really didn’t try to show at all anywhere up to Ep 8. She has been lagging behind in terms of studies (in one of the episodes, can’t remember), and she’s admitted to not having any extra special talent in art (her paintings are.. mediocre, at best?) [Oh, so excited to see her playing the piano in Ep 8 though, I hope they’ll explore that!].
Which brings me to this point that she may look weak and sound weak in her delivery of lines, but the character is not spineless, yo. It was her line that led to the kiss in Ep 6, and though she did backpedal a bit in that window-cleaning scene, it was immediately resolved when Ji Hyuk caught her rummaging through the trash bin. She’s been consistent since, and I was so happy that she made it obvious to Ji Hyuk that she’s not happy (with how he treated her in front of his friends). But ending of Ep 8 is making me nervous, Show has been so good in making those small veers from K-drama cliches that I wonder what Su Ah is going to reply with (preview of Ep 9 ain’t helping either!).
